The nut of the Tagua palm (Phytelephas macrocarpa) is when dried exceptionally hard for a vegetable material (2,5 on Mohs scale) and with its white colour and shine a beautiful material.
It is used for jewelry, marquetry, finish material for luxury products (knives, pens etc.), musical instruments and figurine carving (scrimshaw, netsuke).

Which size to choose
The tagua material inside the nut is not uniform. In the center of the nut the tagua is more brittle and the contains cracks and often a void.
When tagua dries the material looses water and shrinks. This causes cracks and even a void inside the nut.
The smaller the nut, the smaller the cracks. So expect the largest void and cracks inside the bigger nuts.
Smaller nuts are ideal for making beads and other jewelry pieces, large nuts for carving.
For slicing and cutting choose the smallest size that fits your needs.
We recommend the larger nuts for carving.
When slicing larger sizes, do so lengthwise on the three sides of the nuts. This way you minimize the odds you hit the void.
All tagua nuts are well dried, selected on size and garantueed of first quality.
